Types of Wooden Frames for Doors and Windows

Importance of Frames

The primary job of a frame is to seal around and provide support to the entire system. It guards and holds the pane or any material inside it. The frame sizes the breadth of the wall and holds the object in a place. It also adds an aesthetic sense.

Different frames serve different purposes. Its strength and durability affect the longevity of the door and window. Exterior and interior frames usually have different properties, as the frames that are used outside will have to face different weather elements as compared to the interior ones.

Frame holds the window and the door into the wall of a building and acts as a boundary between them and the wall. They are important for levelling & support, hinging & closing, and locking & protection.

Parts of a Door & Window Frame

The frame that surrounds the door is called a jamb in common and is made up of three separate pieces.

  • The horizontal piece above is called Head with two grooves into which the door jamb fits. (Head/upper jamb/lintel)
  • The horizontal piece below the door is called the Sill or threshold. It protects the door from water and gives rigidity to the frame.
  • The vertical long pieces on the sides of the door and window are called Door Stops. They are the tiny strips of wood that hold the door to its hinges.

Jambs or legs or hinge jamb are the vertically running pieces to which the hinges are attached.

DOOR FRAME

They are of two types. The internal door frames called the door linings are usually open frames. They aren’t sturdy as external ones. And the external is called closed frames.

It is the jamb that surrounds the door creating a frame into which it sits. The two vertical frames are called the side jambs and the horizontal is referred to as the head jamb. The door once hung in the wall frame is the one that solely holds it, and a door frame can be made load bearing too.
